Permanent Resident Card
The permanent resident card, commonly known as the Maple Leaf Card, is a plastic card the size of a credit card or a Canadian driver's license, and serves as the official identification of a permanent resident in Canada. Permanent residents must present the card to Canadian customs when entering Canada by a commercial carrier, such as aircraft, merchant ships, trains or buses. When entering Canada by private means of transport, such as by car, other forms of identification are also valid. In some cases, identification documentation may not need to be shown.
If you are a permanent resident planning to leave Canada, make sure your PR card is still valid when you return. PR cards are usually valid for 5 years. This card is not required if the you have no intention of leaving the country.
When a new immigrant lands for the first time, he/she informs the border officer of the residential address to receive the card. The card will be sent to the applicant by mail within 3 months. If the card is lost, damaged, expired, or not received within 3 months of landing, the applicant may reapply for a new PR card.
To be eligible for a PR Card, you must:
- 满足 Duty of residence meet the residency requirement
- Be physically present in Canada;
- not be under an effective removal order
- Not be a Canadian citizen or have Indian status

入籍成为加拿大公民 Canadian Citizenship
After immigrating to Canada, the applicant becomes a permanent resident of Canada. Permanent residents are not Canadian citizens and do not have Canadian citizenship. Canadian citizens and immigrants have the right to enter Canada without restrictions, and have the right to study, work and reside in any Canadian province or territory. In most provinces, permanent residents and citizens have access to the same social benefits, the right to study, live and work, healthcare coverage, and tax rates.
The differences between permanent residents and citizens are mainly reflected in the following aspects:
- Permanent residents need to fulfill their Duty of residenceIf you have lived outside of Canada for a long period of time, there is a possibility of losing your permanent resident status; but this does not apply to Canadian citizens.
- Permanent residents do not have the right to vote and be elected: permanent residents do not have the right to vote during the general election, nor can they hold specific government office roles.
- Permanent residents cannot apply for a Canadian passport: The Canadian passport is one of the passports powerful in the word. A Canadian passport holder can enter 170 countries worldwide without a visa.
- Conviction of a serious offense may lead to revocation of permanent resident status: A Canadian permanent resident’s status can be revoked for a convicted federal crime or false representation to the immigration authorities. After becoming a citizen, citizenship can only be revoked for false representation in the process of obtaining citizenship. Legal procedures for revocation of citizenship are far more complicated than revocation of permanent resident status. Conviction of serious crimes will not lead to revocation of citizenship.
Permanent residents over the age of 18 can apply for citizenship. To be eligible, you must:
- not be under a removal order
- have been physically present in Canada for at least 1095 days in the 5 years immediately before you apply
- if required to do so, have filed personal income taxes for at least 3 years within the 5 year period
- if you are between 18 and 54 years old when you apply demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French and that you have knowledge of Canada and of the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship
In the 5 years before the application for citizenship, every day that the applicant legally resided in Canadabefore becoming an Canadian permanent resident counts as a half day up to a maximum of 365 days.
Permanent residents under the age of 18 can apply for citizenship. To be eligible, the child must:
- have a parent or legal guardian who can assist the child in submitting a citizenship application
- have at least one parent or legal guardian who is a Canadian citizen or who will become a citizen at the same time as the child (applying together as a family).
Canada recognizes dual nationality and becoming a Canadian citizen does not mean that you need to renounce the nationality of another country. However, if you hold citizenship from Canada and another country, you cannot obtain consular protection from other countries while in Canada.
《中华人民共和国国籍法》

- 第1步:永久居民递交入籍申请;
- 第2步:在收到考试通知后,参与入籍笔试及面试并通过;
